Why your Botox isn’t lasting
January 17, 2024
We expect most neuromodulatortreatments regardless of the type (e.g. Botox, Dysport, Daxxify) to last 3-4 months if not longer until your muscles are back to their baseline of full movement. Although, the treatment will fade over that time frame. Most patients can expect to have the most restriction 2-6 weeks after injection and then a gradual regain of movement over the next 6 or so weeks. Even so, here are some reasons youmay not be getting the full expected duration out of your treatment.
Dose is too low
The dosage or “units” may not be high enough. If the dosage is too low for your specific muscle strength, the effects may wear off more quickly than expected. Dose = duration. Although some patients may prefer a lower dose for extra movement, a stronger dose will result in increased longevity. Treatments are always customized to the patient’s goals and personal needs but if a patient opts for less than the recommended dose, their treatments will most likely fade quickly.
High Metabolism
Neurotoxins are broken down by the body over time, and some people may metabolize more quickly than others. This can be caused for a variety of reasons including frequent sauna use, long distance running or frequent high intensity workout, or even medical conditions such as hyperthyroidism.
Oxidative Stress
Factors such as smoking, sun exposure, and stress can all contribute to the breakdown of Botox, causing the effects to wear off more quickly than expected. In order to maximize the longevity of your neurotoxin treatment, it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle and take steps to minimize exposure to these factors.
Take Zinc!
Clinical trials have indicated that taking zinc supplements prior to neuromodulatorinjections can increase the longevity of your treatment by as much as 30%. In fact, 92% of the participants in the study who took zinc experienced a quicker onset of Botox effects and longer-lastingresults. To optimize the effects of Botox, it is recommended to start taking zinc a few days before and after your scheduled injections. Further information on this topic can be found here.
